Have LTO or other tape cartridge types that you need to dispose of? Instead of having them destroyed or throwing them into dumpsters, we recommend recycling them.

There are a number of reasons we suggest this, including:

1. Incineration of tape cartridges is expensive and toxic.
2. Perfectly good tape is completely wasted.
3. You miss out on cash that can be gained through tape buyback problems.
4. Throwing tape into dumpsters leads to toxic waste being poured into landfills.
5. Important data can get into the wrong hands if data isn’t completely expunged.

Simply put, there is no good reason not to recycle tape in today’s world. This is why we are constantly working to educate organizations and individuals on the process.

We offer a buyback program by which we offer top dollar for used tape cartridges. Our recycling team sees to it that all data is completely destructed and tapes are made ready for reuse. This process is safe, secure, compliant and highly auditable.

Once tapes are ready, we then make them available for other organizations and individuals to use. This helps saves them large sums of money as they years progress.

Beyond the cost-effectiveness of recycling tape cartridges, there are also huge benefits where industry regulations are concerned.

Our recycling process assures all organizations that their data will be completely expunged in a manner that satisfies all major regulatory bodies including HIPAA, Sox, Sarbanes-Oxley, etc.

And finally, it is important to consider the value of building eco-friendly policies within an organization. Unfortunately, statistics have continue to reveal that organizations within the U.S. and beyond are failing to establish recycling programs.

In fact, less than 3 percent of decommissioned tape cartridges are recycled each year! This is a sad statistic, as the majority of tapes can be reused.

Want to buy, sell, and/or recycle tape cartridges? We can help you out. Drop us an email or give us a call to get started!

Magnetic tape happens to be one of the oldest and most reliable recording technologies ever created. It uses a spool of linearly oriented tape that is composed of several layers, including a magnetic layer, that passes under a read-write head to record binary bit info into tracks.

As time has progressed, tape cartridges have improved by leaps and bounds. Newest versions, such as the LTO-6 can be used much like disks. Data can be written and retrieved faster than ever.

Another key discovery was IBM and Fujifim’s discovery and use of barium ferrite (BaFe). It is a relatively new tape media coating technology and magnetic particle that lends to tape’s reliability, stability, and efficiency.

While there are several types of tape available, LTO tape is quickly emerging as the leader of the pack. Small, medium, and semi-large organizations are continuing to adopt LTO for data archiving and more.

According to Fujifilm, the past 12 years have seen more than 4 million LTO tape drives and nearly 200 million cartridges shipped. The LTO-6 boasts of 6.25 TB of compressed capacity and an impressive transfer rate of 400 MB/sec.

Beyond LTO tape, other popular tape formats include Oracle’s Sun/STK tape drive and cartridge (for huge organizations), the T10000C (which is much faster than LTO tape and hold quite a bit more data), and IBM’s TS1140 (which rivals Oracle’s Sun/STK in both speed and cost).

Why Tape is Not Dead

Tape isn’t dead for a number of very relevant reasons:

1. It is cost-effective. Disk only solutions tend to be much more expensive.
2. It is reliable. Tape is the most data storage medium on the market.
3. It lasts for 30 years and more. When stored in a stable environment, you can be sure that tape will last for decades.
4. It can’t be hacked. Disks can be hacked and are susceptible to bugs, while tape is stored offline and can’t be touched — unless of course a tape gets into the wrong hands.
5. Tape is recyclable.

Experts are still predicting that tape will play a much larger role in the near future. Organizations are learning the hard way that data can be wiped from disks and lost from the cloud. Backing up data on tape is a must.

There’s a lot of misinformation about there about tape and disk storage. For years now, the “experts” have maintained that tape would be dead as a doornail by now. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

First and foremost, it’s important to know exactly what you’re asking when you question disk and tape. There are all sorts of functions that take place when data is being preserved. For instance, there are backups and then there is data restoration.

In the case of a disk backup or data replication, data is send over distance using a WAN. The data is then taken to an offsite storage facility. In this case, you may wonder if this is faster than a tape backup and offsite storage.

The answer depends on a handful of factors, including the amount of data that must be moved across the WAN, the distance that it must be moved, and the overall efficiency of the WAN. It is all too often reported that the speed of a WAN is often quite slow.

If a WAN is slow and inefficient, LTO-6 tape and other leading tape backup options are the way to go. It is possible to transfer massive amounts of data in a very short timespan. Plus, when it comes to stability over time, tape has a very long shelf life.

Another thing to consider when analyzing the efficiency/performance of disk and tape is file structure. It use to be that disk ran circles around tape when users tried to access a particular piece of data or file. Now LTO tape has LTFS (Linear Tape File System), which allows for data to be retrieved much faster than it used to be.

Also, it should be mentioned that the streaming rate of tape is much faster than disk. Thus, when for long block files (such as videos) once the very first byte of a requested file is found, the transfer of the entire file is significantly faster.

As tape continues to evolve, it will be quite interesting to see how its role within the data storage system evolves.

We predict that tape will continue to grow in importance, especially as data storage systems continue to grow exponentially for organizations of all shapes and sizes.

Have any questions surrounding the above info? We’d love to answer them. Please drop us and e-mail or give us a call, and we’ll help steer you in the best possible direction.

As you grow your data storage infrastructure you may quickly find yourself coming up to a critical mass and asking yourself how to decipher between important data and less critical data. This is a common discussion we have with our clients as they decide how to continue to make sense of the data they’ve collected.

You begin to discover that there is some data that you want to keep readily available at all times on disk or the cloud, while other pieces of data can be stored on tape offline. Keeping your data organized is much like keeping your closet clean and functional. It’s value is only is as good as you allow it to be.

In order to help you classify your data and best maintain your data library, there are a handful of things you should consider:

1. Data Type
It is important that you create a classification system by which you indicate a piece of data’s value. One way to do this is to distinguish between file extensions/types. By assigning a context to a file based on its extension, you can easily tell the difference between the value of data.

2. Age
The age of data is often the most useful indicator because most data’s value tends to decline over time. Consider classifying data in relation to its age and setting policies that will help you determine when to pull data offline versus keeping it online indefinitely. Archiving old data to LTO tape can save a considerable amount of money over the long-term.

3. Location
Think carefully as to where exactly each piece or type of data should be stored. The path of a file can truly help indicate its value and make the management of data much easier. Be smart about where you house your data, rather than lumping it all together.

4. Name
There’s a lot of importance in a name. If you label your files with care, you can take a lot of guesswork out of the equation. A file’s name can provide indication of its contents, purpose, and relationship to other files. You can then search for data based on a specific keyword and sort accordingly.

When building out your data library, it’s very important to plan and institute policies that will make data management meaningful and valuable.

Have questions as to which technologies you should use? We’d be happy to help. Drop us an e-mail or call our offices, and we’ll get you pointed in the right direction!

USED-LTO-5-BDSI

When considering the benefits of data tape media, our clients often ask for the top handful of reasons they should make the investment. The top reasons we often give include:

1. LTO is reliable and stable.
2. It’s scalable.
3. Each tape can hold a massive amount of data.
4. It now comes with LTFS for easy file management.
5. Tape is cost-effective and has used resale value

Item number five is without a doubt one of the most compelling benefits for our customers. As you are probably already aware, the costs of a data storage system can grow by leaps and bounds in a matter of weeks. When this occurs, it is quite baffling to see how quickly disk-only data storage infrastructures can become amazingly expensive.

There are several reasons tape is a cost-effective and very reliable option for data backups. The following will provide you a good idea as to tape’s true value:

Tape Allows for You to Offload Old or Useless Data
Instead of utilizing a disk-only or cloud-based data storage solution for both old and new data, you can turn to tape to offload data that isn’t accessed anymore. Tape is stored offline, which means that you’ll use significantly less electricity and not have to house massive amounts of unneeded data for very little reason.

Tape Can Get You Out of Huge Jams
A growing number of organizations are realizing the hard way that they should have been more proactive about backing up their disks. Tape has saved major organizations (such as Google, Yahoo, etc.) from major lawsuits and customer frustrations.

Disk-only data storage environments are looking for major trouble. It isn't uncommon for a disk to be hacked, hit with a bug, and more. Google has had to turn to tape backups several times when data has been completely wiped out.

It is important to expect the very worse scenario possible. Tape backups can save the day and large sums of money.

Tape Can Be Sold in Used Condition and Bought in Refurbished Condition
Tape is recyclable and can be reused. This means that you can both purchase refurbished tape for far less money than when you buy new and you can sell used tape back and earn cash.

Want to learn more about tape? Drop us an e-mail or call our offices, and we’ll answer any questions you may have.
